Why the film has to stay flat

Printed film wants to lift and curl as it heats. If an edge or corner rises off the belt it sits further from the heat tubes than the rest of the sheet, so the powder there does not reach melting point. The result is a transfer that looks fine but peels at the edges after a wash — and the damage is done in the oven, not at the press.

The pump is what prevents that. Steady suction keeps the whole sheet in contact with the belt, so every part of it cures at the same distance from the heat.

Signs the pump is going

• Film edges or corners lifting during the run
• Prints peeling at the edges while the centre holds
• Noticeably louder, or straining audibly through a cycle
• Suction weaker than when the machine was new

It rarely fails outright. It fades — which is why the symptom usually turns up as customer complaints about edge peeling rather than as an obvious breakdown.
